The Punjab government has given the nod to a new traffic licence points system, which will now impose harsher penalties for repeat offences on its roads.
So under a new traffic licence points system, you add 2-4 points for every traffic offense to the driver’s license. Drivers with more than 20 points on their license in a year would receive a license suspension for two months to one year, based on the number and severity of offenses.
Traffic officials said the new traffic licence points system is intended to punish repeat offenders. For example, overtaking and signal violations will attract a cut of four points each as well as a cash penalty.
The new traffic laws try to encourage safer driving by connecting fines with enduring consequences. The new target with this twofold penalty is to discourage hazardous driving and enhance compliance across the province, officials feel.
