After a full month, a new top film at the domestic box office was announced. On its first release day, Warner Bros.’ Blue Beetle topped the charts, demoting its blockbuster Barbie to second place for the first time in its record-breaking month-long run. $10 million was made by Blue Beetle on its first day of release, including $3.3 million from Thursday screenings.
The movie is expected to make about $25 million in its opening weekend, which is on the lower end of the range for superhero movies. Blue Beetle is around half as expensive as most large tent poles today.

Blue Beetle, which was once planned as a direct-to-streaming movie, is now the second-to-last chapter of the DC Extended Universe’s past, which will be revived in 2025 with the release of Superman: Legacy under the direction of James Gunn and Peter Safran. The current DCEU era will officially end with Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom later this year, but Blue Beetle is mostly a distinct story.
The movie’s opening reminds me of Birds of Prey from a few years ago. There is a consensus that the movie underperformed at the box office, earning less than $100 million domestically and about $200 million internationally.
The late-summer superhero movie from DC Comics, Blue Beetle, dethroned Mattel’s Barbie after a month at the top of the box office charts. However, Blue Beetle’s opening still pales compared to rival Marvel’s recent releases, giving DC’s most recent film, which reportedly cost $104 million to produce, a disappointing start.

Barbie lessened the blow, but WB is still coming to terms with three consecutively poorly received superhero movies: Black Adam, Shazam! Fury of the Gods, and The Flash. Blue Beetle is unlikely to improve the studio’s superhero offerings despite its small budget.
After earning $6 million on Friday, Barbie will come in second with an anticipated $20 million for the fifth weekend. By Sunday, the movie’s domestic box office gross might hit $566 million. A few days later, it would surpass Super Mario Bros.
Movie’s $574 million lifetime gross to become the year’s biggest movie. Since Barbie has already earned more than $1.2 billion at the global box office, its success should be repeated there.
