“A little under” 7% of the staff at T-Mobile will lose their jobs, affecting about 5,000 positions. The change will most affect employees in corporate, back-office, and technical functions, while those working in retail or customer service roles won’t.
While AT&T and Verizon are also experiencing layoffs, T-Mobile specifically pledged to continue hiring after combining with Sprint in 2020. Despite this vow, the firm soon began to lay off hundreds of employees, and a 2021 Wall Street Journal article indicated that T-Mobile had 5,000 fewer employees at the end of 2020 than it had before its merger with Sprint.
CEO Mike Sievert says in a note to staff, “What it takes to attract and retain customers is materially more expensive than it was just a few quarters ago,” adding that the company’s current methods are insufficient to “deliver on these changing customer expectations going forward.”
Sievert claims that in addition to the layoffs, the business will need to focus on “re-prioritizing” its work and “optimizing every dollar” to deal with rising costs.
According to Sievert, T-Mobile does not anticipate additional corporate-wide layoffs in the “immediate future.” The carrier will finish sending out layoff notices by the end of September. Affected workers will also be given severance pay depending on their length of service and a minimum of 60 days of transition leave.
T-Mobile has already experienced two data breaches this year alone (on top of several additional cybersecurity incidents over the past few years). The deployment of a faster 5G network that can deliver speeds of up to 3.3 Gbps and the release of a new $100 per month Go5G plan with yearly phone upgrades are two ways that T-Mobile has been pushing to improve its 5G offerings.
