Uber’s recent decision to cease operations in Lahore marks a significant development following its withdrawal from other major Pakistani cities in 2022. This move comes without warning, much like its earlier exits from Islamabad, Karachi, Multan, and several other locations.
The abrupt shutdown of Uber services in Lahore has left many users puzzled, as there were no prior announcements or explanations provided by the company. Seeking clarity, inquiries have been made to the company for an official statement regarding this sudden cessation of operations.
In response to the service discontinuation, the company is directing its Lahore-based clientele towards Careem, its subsidiary company, for their transportation needs. To compensate for the inconvenience, the company is offering a 50% discount on Careem rides using the code LHR50, applicable to the next five rides taken.
An email communication from company to its Lahore customers confirms the cessation of Uber App services effective April 30, 2024. However, ride-hailing services will continue through Careem, ensuring a seamless transition for users to continue accessing transportation solutions.
Regarding financial matters, the company has assured users that it will reach out to those with cash balances in their accounts to initiate refunds. The timeline for these refunds remains unspecified, with Uber committing to processing them “in due course.”
The motivation behind Uber’s sudden exit from Lahore remains elusive. However, in light of previous shutdowns across Pakistan, this decision appears to have been brewing for some time.
Uber’s strategy seems to pivot towards consolidating operations under the Careem brand, suggesting broader shifts within the company’s regional business approach.
