On Sunday, a magnitude 5.1 earthquake in southern California near Ojai jolted the greater Southern California region as locals battled Tropical Storm Hilary’s torrential rains. The earthquake struck at 2:41 p.m. and was felt throughout Southern California.

According to Scott Thomsen, the department’s director of communications, the Ventura County Fire Department promptly enacted its earthquake plan, which includes pulling the trucks out of the firehouses. He added that we have not received any damage complaints yet, but we are checking.
Thomsen stated that the earthquake in Southern California struck while emergency personnel prepared for Hurricane Hilary: “We are in the middle of the first tropical storm since 1939, and we just had an earthquake.” Scientists studying earthquakes were eager to point out that Hilary’s arrival had nothing to do with Sunday’s quake.
Despite a reported downed power line and a broken mobile tower, Ojai Mayor Betsy Stix told The Times on Sunday afternoon that there was not much more damage after speaking with emergency personnel.
Stix claimed that when the shaking began, she was working from home. The floor started trembling, the wall frames shook, and “the cats scattered and ran.” She claimed this day would go down in history due to the tropical storm and the earthquake.

Ojai store owners reported minor damage. Manager Nick Howard of the Ojai Beverage Co. on Ojai Avenue said a $900. Although a few wine bottles and a bottle of tequila had fallen over, the store had generally suffered very little product loss.
According to Patty McFall of OVA Arts, a renowned gallery known for exhibiting works by local artists, we had some damage. Some of the pieces fell. Four or three parts were broken. A jeweler and sculptor, McFall claimed that some of his creations had withstood a fall at Ojai’s Arcada Plaza.
The horrifying sound of objects collapsing and breaking glass, according to Ojai-based journalist Franz Lidz, accompanied the earthquake in Southern California. It was brief, obnoxious, and violent. He texted The Times, “The whole home shook like a Mack truck had fallen into it.
“Bernice, one of the family dogs, felt it first,” he continued. “She recognized right away that there was a serious problem. Although my wife Maggie and I were slower to react, we soon realized we were experiencing an earthquake (maybe within 15 seconds).
Fortunately, everyone is safe, including our neighbors and Bernice, one of our seven-year-old mini-schnauzers. The new automobile in our garage is also safe. She’s still trembling, panting, and cowering on Maggie’s lap a half-hour later. Naturally, her laid-back friend Leavin’ is already asleep.
Fire officials in Ventura County encouraged landowners close to the epicenter to inspect their buildings for damage shortly after the earthquake.
Ojai experienced the most shaking. The U.S. Geological Survey calculated that the shaking intensity was moderate based on the Modified Mercalli Intensity scale. That is plenty to topple unstable objects, smash windows, and stop pendulum clocks.
According to the scale, Ventura, Oxnard, and Camarillo most likely experienced light shaking. That can sound like a vehicle hitting a building and is powerful enough to shake dishes and windows.
The earthquake’s epicenter was located in a remote region of Sulphur Mountain, four miles southeast of Ojai and ten miles northeast of Ventura. The northwest corner of downtown Los Angeles is 60 miles away. According to Ventura County representatives, the earthquake occurred near the Sisar fault system.
According to seismologist Lucy Jones, a brief foreshock sequence that started on Saturday morning and had a maximum magnitude of 2.5 preceded the Ventura County earthquake in Southern California that occurred on Sunday.
There have been multiple aftershocks since the earthquake. Residents of Southern California reported receiving an earthquake early warning on the MyShake app on their smartphones before experiencing any shaking. One passenger said they were given a seven-second warning.
